The Companion Parrot

Companion parrots come in many shapes and sizes. When one thinks of a companion parrot they usually think of a parrot associated with a pirate.  Most forget about a lot of the others out there like the cockatoo.  All together there are 353 different types of parrots and they fall into 2 different families, Cacatuidae or cockatoos, and the Psittacidae or true parrots.  Of the 353 types, Cockatoos acount for 21.

Some of the more common of the parrots are the Macaws, the African grays and Conjures.  For the cockatoos, there are the Umbrella and Goffin.

On this site we will be going into each one and helping you chose if a companion parrot is right for you and which one, if that is the case.  There are many different factors that come into play when choosing a companion parrot.  They include noise tolerance, children, and budget.

You can't have a screeching cockatoo in an apartment, and most, if not trained properly or if startled, even by accident can take of a child's finger.  You also have to take into account housing for your companion parrot. A proper birdcage can be very expensive, as well as the parrot itself.  Another thing to be aware of is the sensitivity that the companion parrot has to diet and other items in the household that can harm your featherd friend.  These things need to be paid attention to so that your companion parrot can remain healthy and have a long enjoyable life.

A companion parrot also needs time out of his cage to spend with you for fun time, training, and exercise.  There are many types of items you can get to help you with these things for your companion parrot, including play stands and training videos.
